Theme In Yellow

Theme In Yellow

By Carl Sandburg

I spot the hills
With yellow balls in autumn.
I light the prairie cornfields
Orange and tawny gold clusters
And I am called pumpkins.
On the last of October
When dusk is fallen
Children join hands
And circle round me
Singing ghost songs
And love to the harvest moon;
I am a jack-o’-lantern
With terrible teeth
And the children know
I am fooling.

A FIVE YEAR OLD’S VIEW OF HALLOWEEN

By Beatrice Dahlen

The doorway’s bathed in dimness
of a pumpkin’s flickering grin.
The portal creaks ajar,
but my feet will not go in.
From somewhere deep within me
a stuttered greeting trips.
So hushed, these noises almost
don’t make it past my lips.
I trip towards promised treasures
there in the yawning door.
I could escape, but cravings
prod me to the fore.
Though fear engulfs my being
I rise to this one feat.
I hold my sack out towards the trove
and stammer ‘Trick or Treat.’

Creative pumpkin carvings inspired by famous art

Pumpkin carving is a traditional activity during the Halloween season, and some folks have taken their inspiration for pumpkin carving from famous art — Vincent van Gogh’s Starry Night and Leonardo da Vinci’s Mona Lisa, to name a few.  View the full listing of creative pumpkin carving compiled by Alice Yoo on My Modern Met at:  http://www.mymodernmet.com/profiles/blogs/creative-pumpkin-carvings-inspired-by-art
